Rulers & Curves for Fashion Drawing
Clean, smooth lines are the hallmark of professional fashion illustration. The right ruler or curve template helps you draw consistent necklines, hemlines, and garment proportions without the wobble that freehand drawing can produce — especially useful when you’re working on technical flats.
Essential Rulers for Fashion Designers
1. Standard Ruler (30cm / 12″)
A basic straight ruler is used more in fashion drawing than most beginners expect. It’s essential for:
- Drawing clean hemlines and cuffs on technical flats
- Measuring and marking garment construction guidelines
- Drawing straight seam lines, plackets, and button placements
- Creating grid lines when working on graph paper sketchbooks
Tip: Use a metal-edge ruler when working with markers or ink — the edge won’t absorb or spread the medium the way a plastic edge might.
2. French Curve
A French curve is a template with a variety of curved edges that allows you to draw smooth, consistent curved lines. It’s one of the most used tools in both fashion illustration and patternmaking.
Best uses in fashion drawing:
- Necklines — scoop necks, V-necks, and bateau necklines all benefit from a French curve for a smooth, symmetrical arc
- Armholes — the curved underarm line on both fashion croquis and technical flats
- Side seams — a slight outward curve on side seams gives garments a more natural, fitted silhouette
- Hemlines — curved hems on dresses, shirts, and jackets
- Collar shapes — Peter Pan collars, shawl collars, and other curved collar styles
How to use it: Move the French curve around until you find the section whose curvature matches the line you want to draw. Hold it firmly and draw along the edge. For longer curves, you may need to reposition and blend two sections together.
3. Cloud Ruler (Vary Form Curve)
A cloud ruler is a flexible template with multiple curved sections. It’s similar to a French curve but with more varied shapes, making it especially useful for organic, flowing fashion lines.
4. Fashion Figure Proportion Ruler
Specifically designed for fashion illustration, this ruler shows the standard 9-head fashion figure proportions. Useful for beginners to quickly establish correct figure height and placement of shoulders, waist, and hip lines.
Using Rulers with Technical Flats
Technical flats — the flat, schematic drawings of garments without a figure — require more ruler work than fashion illustration. For flat sketches:
- Use a straight ruler for all vertical and horizontal construction lines
- Use a French curve for all curved seams, necklines, and armholes
- Keep lines consistent in weight — use the same pencil grade throughout
- Work symmetrically: draw one half of the garment, then use the ruler to check that the other half mirrors it
